flor is a mobile app that aims to help novices who want to explore the natural world by transforming plant discovery into a fun, rewarding adventure while gaining knowledge.

HMW Statement
How might we entice and engage users to learn about flora while keeping a fun, replayable game loop?
User Journey
We mapped the end-to-end journey—from initial curiosity to lasting impact.

User Research
We conducted an informal user report presenting the user a beta version of our
prototype, from this I was able to pull insight on primarily UI improvements and
building features that enhance user experience while exploring the local flora around them.
Experience Pillars
Playful Discovery Loop
Turn plant spotting into bite-sized challenges that feel like a game.
Learn-as-You-Go
Micro-lessons tied to what the user just scanned—never a wall of text.
Collections at a Glance
A simple, visual library that grows with the user.
Progress & Mastery
Visible growth keeps motivation high beyond the first week.
Insights Summary

Features
Our features were created off a game model, I introduced the concept model of a personal garden users could use as a means to see virtual representations within their garden.
Onboarding
Onboarding includes a walkthrough of collecting, exploring & learning alongside your preferred play and learning style.
Navigation
The map highlights nearby flora hotspots. When you’re close, you’ll get a prompt to open the scanner and identify registered plants.
Snap & Scan
Badge quest unlocked! Scan a plant with your camera, then add its visual counterpart to your virtual garden.
Collect Badges
You’ve collected a badge! Keep exploring and rack up more to unlock special rewards.
Learn
Tap your plant to explore its history, use cases, safety info, and more.
Visual Direction
Early concept tests felt too sterile—more “educational” than “fun.” Based on that feedback, I suggested we shifted to a playful, rounded visual language and brightened the palette to amplify warmth, energy, and approachability.

Badges
We created simple badges that align with our visual language, using distinct vector illustrations to depict each quest and a consistent color palette across them.

Map Iconography
Map iconography was crafted to make landmarks in the Washington Park Arboretum easy to spot and navigate to.

Illustrative Flora
Illustrative plant assets were developed to demonstrate the virtual counterparts of plants that users scan into their garden.

Takeaways
Being physically present as a team streamlines workflow & facilitates more meaningful discussions than remote collaboration.
Delegating soft & hard deadlines
Scalability outside the arboretum, understanding that this concept model can be applied to aquariums, zoos, insects and more!
Weekly syncs and check ins with teammates is very important
